SENEGAL - A community meeting room in Peleo

For the young people of Peleo, the dream is becoming a reality: to give a meeting room to the village, as a place of congregation and to hold events.

Located 11 km south of Thies, and 100 km east of Dakar, Peleo is village open to innovation and change. It knows how to get organized. Many groups are very mobilized: young people, students, and women as well as some people who work for the Senegalese administration.

In 1993, without outside support, the Association of the Young People of Peleo began to construct a multifunctional room out of mud bricks. This structure was to be used for adult literacy classes, training sessions and as a meeting room. Unfortunately, while the room was nearing completion, it had to be stopped due to lack of funds. The rainy season which followed severely damaged the building to the point of non repair. Since then, the literacy courses can only be given from the home of the teacher.

But the young people kept their project in mind, and, with the help of Eau Vive, the village is constructing a multi-roomed center consisting of one large room (12.3 x 8 m) which holds the title of literacy room, nursery, cultural and congregational meeting room, and three little rooms that are almost identical which are to be used as an office, a store and a spare room.

About 50 m from the principal establishment, there is an ablution block with toilets and showers.

With the construction of the center, the young people as well as all of the inhabitants of the village of Peleo have access to a precious tool for promoting community life.
