FOOD SECURITY

The countries of the Sahelian zone have known recurring food crises for many years. The environmental degradation, closely linked to the demographic stress and the climatic hazards, renders the agricultural and animal production insufficient to respond to the needs of the population.

To fight effectively for the long term against the food crisis, Eau Vive acts on multiple levels:

Production

It's about improving the market and agricultural productions: diversification of seeds, agricultural locations, development of community gardens.

Animal husbandry constitutes not only a food base, but also a substantial source of revenue for the populations. Eau Vive proposes to intervene on the improvement of the breeding and the animal health (fattening, veterinary care.).

Cereal banks

The cereal banks constitute an effective alternative for the fight against food insecurity, but also to stop the inflation of cereal prices and speculations during the lean period.

With this system, cereals are bought during harvest time at market price, stocked in an adequate storeroom to assure the best conservation, later to be sold at a moderate price by the villagers.

Improvement of the household revenues

In order to optimize the production and diversification of the products, Eau Vive supports the villagers in the production of the agricultural products (yogurt, cheese, curing) but equally in the activities such as dying and soap factories.

These activities constitute new sources of revenue for the families, who can draw on their savings in case of difficult times.

Support of commercialization

In order to accompany the production activities, Eau Vive proposes training, putting producers and buyers in contact to develop commercial networks.
