NIGER
Niger is one of the lowest income countries in the world.
After many years of political instability, the country is now in a better position to revive its development.
The country has 10.5 million inhabitants of which 85% live in rural zones where basic social needs are hardly met. Barely 40% of the rural population has access to drinkable water, 30% of the children of school age are able to go to school and more than 50% of the rural population doesn't have access to primary health care.
The economy of the country is based essentially on a "Capital resources duality" The limited natural resources are being degraded due to demographic pressure. This imbalance between needs and natural resources strongly handicaps the development of the country in the absence of other strong sectors (industrial, commercial, etc.).
EAU VIVE IN NIGER
The last of the operational teams to be created in the Sahel, the Eau Vive Niger team has been in Niamey since 2000. They also have a branch in Maradi, in order to be closer to the priority action zones.
It is in a national context where there is an overall desire to start development, that the Eau Vive team leads activities to allow Nigeriens to improve the conditions of their daily life, while thinking and working towards the future.
The support of Eau Vive is more than necessary, not only for basic social needs but also to enable the Nigerian people to mobilize, to organize themselves and to work towards present and future progress.
Its for this reason, and conscious of the fact that meeting basic needs alone will not bring about the long-awaited changes, that the Eau Vive team also invests in making proposals to government authorities, who make and unmake policies to help them to get a better vision of the conditions of development.
